Friday photo: Cardinal in winter

03.26.2010 by Susan Getgood //

Cardinal

Cardinals are pretty birds year round, and I love the spring, when the females turn a more rosy, less brown shade. But there’s something so striking about a male cardinal in winter.

ADDED: I had already posted this photo when I learned about the beyond snapshots photo contest to win a red epiphanie camera bag.  (Hat tip Yvonne at Joy Unexpected). To enter, you have to post a photo that represents red. Since that’s pretty much why I adore cardinals, I figured why not enter. Contest ends April 2d.

Amidst the snowstorm today, we had this visitor in the backyard.

Blown off course

Earlier this week we had some unexpected visitors to our yard – a flock of about 20 Robins that must have been blown up the coast by the Christmas storm. It was fairly warm on Monday (when the picture above was taken) so they weren’t in any apparent hurry to leave.

On Tuesday, the weather turned very cold. Unfortunately, there was also a very brisk wind so the birds were stuck. About the only thing they could find to eat were the holly berries in the bushes by our front door. I was able to get some nice shots through the dining room window.

I haven’t seen them since Tuesday evening, so imagine they managed to make their way south to warmer climes.
