It’s all in how you ask…

06.18.2010 by Susan Getgood //

This morning, I received an email from a family lifestyle magazine, congratulating me that they had chosen one of my Flickr photos  to be featured in their travel section.

For a credit.  No compensation.

Now, if I had submitted my photo for this “opportunity,”  the email language wouldn’t bother me.  But I’ve never even heard of the publication. They found my picture on Flickr, and want to use it for free. In their magazine. Where they sell ads.

I’m not a hard-ass about my photos. When asked nicely, and depending on the use, I’m happy to give permission to use my images at no charge. Shortly after we returned from Africa, an educational website requested permission to use one of my photos of Victoria Falls.

But this? The tone bugs me. The spin makes it sound like the magazine, which again I have never heard of,  is doing me a favor, when in fact it is I that would be doing something for them. Seems to me that if you are going to make money from my work, I should be compensated. And you should at least ask nicely.

It’s not even clear that the credit would be with the photo. It could just as easily be buried in a list somewhere. How many other people get similar emails from publications and are fooled by the flattery?

What am I going to do? I’m planning to reply to this query that my photo is available for a one-time use fee, payable to my PayPal account. And I’ve signed up for the new (announced today) Request to License service on Flickr from Getty Images that directs queries to use my copyrighted images to Getty, who will negotiate licensing for me.

Am I expecting to make tons of money from licensing my images? No. But I invest in my camera equipment and lightly edit the photos I upload to Flickr. That’s time and money on my part. If a publication or website wants to use my images, we both need to get something out of the deal.

Has this happened to you, with your photos, and how have you handled it?

By the way, here’s the image in question. Not entirely sure how it fits with baby fashion, but whatever. It was taken just outside of Mosi-O-Tunya National Park in Zambia.

Get in gear. Your Top Gear.

My latest television obsession is the BBC car show Top Gear. Go figure.

On our trip over to Africa last Fall, my brother was watching episodes of the series on his netbook, and I saw a bit of it, but kept forgetting to check it out once I got home. Until a few Sundays ago when I was grooming the dogs, and my husband turned on the TV for me. It happened to be set to BBC America from the previous night’s episode of Doctor Who. I caught the end of the Gordon Ramsay cooking show (man, does he have a foul mouth). Followed by two episodes of Top Gear. And I was hooked.

My brother is a car nut. I am not, although I do have strong feelings for my New Beetle Convertible, which I bought in 2003. And have always had a certain affection for the Ford Mustang, Triumph Spitfire, and MG Spider and Midget convertibles. The classic ones. And I like Jaguars although I would never buy one.

Uh Oh. More of a car nut than I thought.

Which explains why this show has hooked me. Because it’s about cars, but it’s more than cars. It taps into how we feel about cars. I have a 2005 Toyota Highlander as my primary car because I need something to lug around kids and dogs, and wanted a hybrid. I have a New Beetle convertible because I love driving with the top down and have happy memories of a Bug we had when I was a kid.

Top Gear hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May love cars. They also love to entertain, and get a certain amount of pleasure about putting one over on each other. It’s gorgeous TV, and you don’t need to love cars to love this show.

Check it out.

Bonus: Do you remember all your cars?  Here are mine: Chevy Impala, an Audi of some sort (didn’t have it long), Dodge Colt (my first standard car), Nissan Sentra, Dodge Neon, Jeep Grand Cherokee and currently the Toyota Highlander and my convertible.

Hawaii Five-O

05.31.2010 by Susan Getgood //

I’m thinking, yes. Hawaii, nostalgia, plus Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park, and James Marsters as the arch-nemesis. Yum.

Here are the new opening credits:

And for a walk down memory lane, here’s the original:

Watching the two, one thing that stands out is the equality of the four leads in the credits in the new version. In the original, Jack Lord had star billing, and the other three regulars were “with.”

Aloha.
