Down on the Farm

05.29.2007 by Susan Getgood //

Well not exactly a farm. We own a house and some land in Barnard VT, just outside Woodstock. David has been remodeling the house for the past year, and we’ve started going up on weekends as a family. It’s great because we can bring the dogs. In fact, Dave spent a large part of this past weekend working on a brick patio which we are going to fence in as a dog yard. I on the other hand was tasked mostly with keeping Douglas out of his way. A 7-year old’s “help” is problematic shall we say when you are trying to get a big project done :-).

Saturday, Douglas and I ventured to Rutland to buy a (cheap) gas grill. On the way to Rutland, we had lunch in Pittsfield. On the way back, we popped into the Norman Rockwell Museum and got ice cream at the Mountain Creamery in Woodstock.

On Sunday, we spent most of the day at Billings Farm and Museum. It was sheep shearing weekend, and they had plenty of activities for the kids. Ice cream making, weaving, carding wool, crafts, plus meeting the baby chicks and the oxen, and watching them shear the sheep for the summer. The farm house is quite impressive, if not typical of Vermont life in 1890. Entire picture set.

We also wandered a bit in the village Sunday afternoon. Much as Chicago did cows and NYC did german shepherd dogs, Woodstock and vicinity are doing sheep. We saw quite a few over the weekend and took a few pics. More over the summer, I’m certain. We’re planning to stay at the house for most of August, assuming we can get the Internet access sorted. One of the only drawbacks of the house is that we are in a cell dead zone. No cell phone, no Blackberry email or web access. Right now, only dial-up (snooze). We can get satellite, just need to order it. On the to-do list.

Now for the $25K question: do you know what this animal is? We think it is a weasel that had set up a den under our porch. Needless to say, the dogs took a dim view of it. Dave sealed up all the little gaps in the foundation, and afterward we never saw it again. Although the dogs did remain hopeful!

Bad SitCom Episode: The Craptastic Day

05.24.2007 by Susan Getgood //

So, you think you had a bad day.  Well, let me tell you a bit about mine. With pictures, although not taken by me.

It was sort of a good news/bad news sequence of events, and reads a bit like a sketch you might see on a Fox sitcom. Except I’m a Democrat.

Bad News: This morning our washer broke. Not the end of the world certainly, but Douglas is 7 and we are expecting puppies in a couple of weeks. Puppies make LOTS of laundry. So David called the appliance store downtown.

Good News: If we came down and ordered something right away, they could deliver in the afternoon. . So we drove downtown, parked the VW Beetle convertible on Main Street right in front of the store, and went in to select a washing machine.

Things are looking up in Mudville. Ah ha. Not so fast.

Bad News: While we are in the store, a big industrial truck takes out the VW. I mean, takes it out: serious driver side damage, no more mirror and the bumper. Well, it is hanging on by a prayer. Plus a dead tire. This is to my PARKED car. We of course are in the store and still clueless. Until we come out to a police officer approaching, pointing to the car and asking if we knew who owned it.  Pictures.

I know you are thinking there’s no more Good News here. Well, in fact, there is. About a block away they were shooting a TV commercial for Subway and it took all of 1 minute for the police officers on detail there to get to our little accident. Which mind you, we still don’t know about. This means the driver of the truck, had he been so inclined, could not avoid the consequences. By the time we came out, the Hudson police officer had everything under control, the tow truck on the way and the truck driver cited for reckless driving. Needless to say, the driver has accepted total responsibility, so while I won’t have my baby for a few weeks,  my insurance won’t get tagged to fix the car.

BTW the new washing machine is awesome.

Nevertheless, I am taking tomorrow off. Back Tuesday, hopefully with pictures of our new patio. Have a great weekend.

Capture Your Ever After with Shrek & HP

05.23.2007 by Susan Getgood //

As I mentioned in my initial post, I occasionally help HP with blogger outreach. The most recent project was for the Capture Your Ever After photo contest.

Even though this blog is pretty new, and its readers are probably just me, the designer, my mother and my aunt, I wanted to share it with you.

Tied to the release of Shrek 3, the contest runs for 6 weeks. The first 5 weeks have themes, and the final week is a runoff among the winners of the previous weeks. There are more than 600 prizes per week, and a pretty awesome grand prize, so it is well worth your time to wade through your photo files. The winners are selected by viewer vote, and entrants are provided with a "forward to a friend" link to their photo to make it easy to tell their friends and family to vote for them.

The first two weeks are over (week 2 entries end at midnight tonight.) The third week for entries starts Friday May 25th. The theme is Fairy Tails — pets.Themes for the following weeks are Go Green and My Little Ogre (kids). The runoff follows, with the grand prize winner to be announced at the end of June.

Check it out, and if you enter, remember to let me know. I can’t enter, but I can vote 🙂
