Glee-full, or how I finally crossed over to the Gleek-side

05.06.2011 by Susan Getgood //

The title card for the musical comedy series G...

I’d heard about Glee, but I’d resisted watching. I really don’t know why, because it is exactly the sort if show I *would* like. Then one night last January I was looking for something to watch and found it on “On Demand.”

The Rocky Horror episode.

I was hooked. I watched all the other eps available on demand and online. I watched the Super Bowl “Zombies” ep. I bought the Season 1 DVDs so I could catch up.

I fell in love. With Rachel and Finn and Finchel. And Kurt. And, yes, Puck. Because bad boys….

Yeah, you know.

And Sue Sylvester. There are no words for how evil the character is. Or how talented her portrayer Jane Lynch is.

So now I am waiting for Prom and Nationals, like all the other Gleeks.

And reading spoilers, because I am a spoiler whore.

So, here’s a prediction. According to multiple sources, a beloved female character dies in the episode Funeral (week after next.) I think it will be Becky — she’s the only character (except for the Cheerios) that I can think of that would get both Sue and Will at the funeral as well as all the Glee kids.

We’ll see in 2 weeks.

Oh… and Finchel all the way. Dianna Agron is a lovely actress but I’ve fallen for the Finn and Rachel chemistry. Not to mention Lea Michele’s voice. Watch any of her clips on the official Glee site to see (and hear) what I mean. And much as I like watching Michele duet with Cory Monteith (Finn), my absolute favorite so far was a duet she did with Chris Colfer (Kurt) in the episode “Duets,” a mashup of  “Get Happy” & “Happy Days Are Here Again” that was actually an homage to Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland, who did it first in 1960. Wish I could show you the Glee version, as it is just amazing, but enjoy the originals instead:

On another note, the $100 VISA card giveaway on my Chow Hounds post is over, and   I will announce the winner in my next post. However, there is a second group of reviews in the BlogHer sponsored conversation campaign for Purina Pro Plan Selects, each of which offers an opportunity to win a gift card. Check it out!

Comic-Con: The Guild, Castle & Eureka plus a few words about the Doctor Who finale

07.28.2010 by Susan Getgood //

Next year, I’m taking my vacation at Comic-Con. My husband thinks this is weird and does not plan on joining me but I think my son will want to come. That may say something about the sophistication of his media tastes. Or more likely, the total geeky nerdiness of mine.

At its panel, web series The Guild did not disappoint with its latest music video, Game On (above) although truly nothing will surpass last year’s Do You Want to Date My Avatar.

Guild star Felicia Day also popped into the Eureka panel to announce that she’ll be guest-starring in a 10-ep arc, possibly as love interest for Wil Wheaton‘s character, who was featured in last week’s episode and is going to be on the show for an unspecified number of episodes. Here’s the Eureka video from Comic-Con:

If you watch the show, you know that the season started with a “reset” caused by the time traveling of the five main characters. Lots of possibilities with that scenario that only get more delicious with the addition of new regular James Callis, plus the afore-mentioned additions of Day and Wheaton.

The best part though? Hinted at in the show’s Comic-Con trailer — the return of Nathan Stark, foil and “frenemy” of  hero Sheriff Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson).

Now to Castle. They did a lot with the “Richard Castle” persona, including a launching a Twitter mystery, via video.

Next season, one of the undercurrents is going to be the filming  of Castle’s first Nikki Heat novel, and part of the Comic-Con panel was a reading by Nathan Fillion (Castle)  and Stana Katic (Beckett) of one of the steamier sections of the novel (clip via I Am A TV Junkie dot com):

They also released a trailer for the movie:

The big spoiler though was that Castle  is arrested for murder in the premiere. I imagine it all works out, since they haven’t changed the name of the series to “Castle Behind Bars” but I’m sure it will only exacerbate the [sexual] tension between Castle and Kate Beckett (the inspiration of the Nikki Heat character.) Here’s that clip:

Finally, nothing to do with Comic-Con, but how awesome was the Doctor Who finale, The Big Bang. I agree with Ain’t It Cool News, that Matt Smith now owns the role. And that this episode was perfectly brilliant Doctor Who. I can’t wait to find out what happens next. And isn’t that what Doctor Who has always been about —

What Happens Next?

Bonus: the BBC released some awesome wedding pix from Amy & Rory’s wedding (via The Inside Trekker)

More news from Comic-Con: Bones, Fringe, Avengers & Green Lantern

07.25.2010 by Susan Getgood //

Picking through more Comic-Con news:

Bones – Booth (David Boreanaz) will return from Afghanistan with a new girlfriend. Watch Zap2It’s interview with Boreanaz and co-star Emily Deschanel (Brennan). Here’s the teaser reel from the panel at Comic-Con:

Fringe – The panel didn’t really give too much away about the coming season, but this clip did make me appreciate actor Joshua Jackson (Peter) even more. He is one funny guy:

Movies based on comic books – Marvel brought down the house yesterday  when it assembled the cast of its Avengers movie, due in 2012, onstage —  Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Samuel Jackson (Nick Fury), Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), plus director Joss Whedon. The casting of Mark Ruffalo (replacing Edward Norton) was the big news.

But actor Ryan Reynolds’ recitation of the Green Lantern oath earlier that day in the DC Comics panel was a close second (hat tip ScreenCrave):

Also worth watching: EW’s interview with Reyonolds and fellow castmembers.
