The last day of summer camp

July 21, 2007 | Douglas

The day camp Douglas attends every summer closes out each session with a performance by all the campers. Doug’s group performed a dance to the music of the Lion King. Note Doug’s improvisations.

Doug’s Lobster Dinner

July 15, 2007 | Douglas, Travel

So yesterday, I said I didn’t think I’d use Scrapblog much. Figures that today Doug would reach an important milestone that merited the Scrapblog treatment: his first lobster dinner of his very own in a restaurant. We went into Boston today, popped in quickly to the NE Aquarium, and then took a Harbor Cruise to Charlestown where we briefly toured a destroyer and the USS Constitution. Afterward, we went to Legal Seafoods for a late lunch, early dinner:

The weird thing about Scrapblog was that today I could not find a simple direction to “generate embed code.” Instead I had to muck around with the different publish options until I found one that would work with my Wordpress blog.

On another note, Doug and I both took our new HP cameras today. I was a bit disconcerted at not having a viewfinder, even though we really don’t use them that much with snapshot cameras, but overall, pleased with the quality of the photos. You can see the whole set from the day on Flickr.

Doug’s principal goal was to get a good picture of a jelly fish. Which he did.

Douglas Courage

July 12, 2007 | Douglas

At camp today, Douglas, one of his friends and a counselor were bee stung. They were all on a nature walk with the group, but Doug, his friend Olivia, another child and a counselor were a bit behind. Olivia stepped on a bee hive and it was all over except the screaming and the shouting. Doug had four stings, Olivia five and the counselor one. Apparently the other child escaped sting-less.

Anyway, by the time camp called us, Doug was fine and off on an activity. But we decided to make the evening a little special so we went out for a bite to eat at the local pub. He wanted to have his picture taken in front of a “John Courage” pub sign, but since it was a mirror, we discovered pretty quickly that straight on showed Mom in the picture. Not happening.

So I took the picture from the side. I quite like it.

So you say it’s your birthday

July 5, 2007 | Douglas, Family, General

Today is indeed my birthday. Douglas and David did a wonderful job of surprising me with birthday presents this morning:

birthday-gift.jpg This is a digital photo frame, very cool.

I did not expect either of the gifts as I knew David had already ordered these dishes from LL Bean and we had also gotten each other a Broadway in Boston subscription (Dave’s birthday is two weeks after mine.)

I guess that’s why they call it a surprise :-)

Now some people worry that having a birthday in a holiday week is a no fun. I’ll admit, having a birthday near Christmas, as my brother does, isn’t too great. Folks either forget or give you just one gift for both birthday and Christmas, which really sucks for a child when quantity of gifts is the preferred measure.

But Fourth of July week. Man, oh man, Mom-101, do not worry about Thalia. Even if you don’t read her my comment about the benefits of this birthday week, she will figure them out for herself.

Here’s the deal:

If you live in North America and your birthday is in the first week of July, you can pretty much celebrate the whole week.

In the US, it is easier if your birthday is in the few days after the 4th, and I imagine in Canada, it works best the closer your day is to Canada Day. You start with family celebrations on the relevant holidays, and sometimes that takes a couple of days. If any of your friends are around, maybe your mom will take you all to the movies or something. And then, when the holiday week is over, and your friends are back in town, you get the birthday party.

The fireworks?

The rest of the country may be celebrating Independence. Your family…. it ends up being all about you. Don’t believe me? Ask my mom. When she asked if we could come over for a cook-out this week, it was for my birthday celebration, not the Fourth of July.

Born near the Fourth of July? It’s not bad at all.

The week that was

June 24, 2007 | Animals, Douglas, Family

No easy way to say it. Last week, a good friend died unexpectedly and way too soon.  He was a good friend to Dave and me, and my brother in law Dick’s best friend since, well, forever. Rest in Peace Flip.

Dick, my brother in law, came up from Pittsburgh for the funeral. Here is a picture Douglas took of his Uncle and Dad.

In more lighthearted news (unless you are a field rodent or a chipmunk) our nine-year old bitch Music and her best feline friend Merlin have been casing a section of the fence. I rescued a chipmunk yesterday from a fate…. well, you know.

Edited in Picasa, image size reduced in irfanview.

Finally, for puppy fans, here’s a picture of the puppy bitch at two weeks.

Their eyes are open and they should be walking, albeit like drunken sailors, within the next few days.

Three Piggy Opera

June 10, 2007 | Douglas

Last Thursday was the 1st Grade production of the Three Piggy Opera. You know the story — huff, puff etc.

Douglas was a Stick Peddler. I got some okay shots, but this was the first time I wished for the control that an SLR gives you. They somewhat dimmed the lights, and the lens on my little Canon Digital Elph just couldn’t cope with distance and dimness. So we may start looking around, pricing the options. Maybe for Christmas.

But I still don’t want all that weight when we are on the move, sightseeing, hiking etc., so I suspect the point and shoot will always be with me.

Here’s a picture of Douglas saying his lines. I softened the image (soft focus) and then focused on him (focal B&W) using Picasa.
